Oak Grove Orchard is Born
Between
the 4th and 15th of January volunteers continued working at the
tree nursery. A large Laurel stump was dug out and a fallen
pile of stone cleared to make way for a composting area. Enough
stone was salvaged to build the steps into the nursery and the
retaining wall of the pond - to be situated in the corner between
two high stone walls and fed by a wet weather spring. Wood chips
were spread along the path and composting area to help dry the
muddy ground. A stock proof fence had to be put in along the edge
facing the lane and hedging plants trimmed. The remaining Holly
berries were cleaned (approx 5Kg) and stratified as were the boxes
of crab apples. The stratification chest was finished and sited
under the old apple tree – the last remaining clue that an
orchard once flourished there.
Fruit trees are to be planted on the upper terrace. We are very
happy to have made contact with growers of the local Ditsum Plum
and have made arrangements to source some of these unique trees.
Green Dragon in consultation with the Landmatters Co-op decided
on the name “Oak Grove Orchard” for the nursery.
