Woodland Mushrooms
On
Friday 19th of November 2004 we began inoculating some of the
Sycamore thinnings with edible Oyster mushroom spores. Initially
we are
experimenting with a small log pile that will hopefully produce,
along with sales of "grow your own" kits, enough funds to set
up a larger woodland mushroom project. The image on the right
shows the cleaning and preparation of freshly cut logs and the
tapping in of Birch dowles that carry the mushroom spawn.
Oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus Ostreatus) are a delicious
and sort after delicacy as well as being a very effective way
of organically recycling woodland thinnings and stumps. They
even digest waste paper and damaged books! - see mushrooms
